Alan Michette

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alan G. Michette (born February 1, 1950 in Norwich , † May 13, 2013 in Windsor ) was a British physicist . He achieved international importance in the field of X-ray physics, especially soft X-rays .

Career

Michette studied from 1968 at University College London , where he received his doctorate in the field of particle physics in 1975 . In the course of his studies through to his doctorate, he won several university awards. After a postdoctoral fellowship from the Science Research Council , Michette initially worked as a researcher at what is now the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory . In 1981 he took a position as a professor at Queen Elizabeth College in London and followed in the course of its merger with King's College London 1984-1985 there. As a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation , Michette spent a year at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching from 1988–1989 .

In 2001 he became a professor at King's College, where he temporarily headed the Department of Physics .

Alan Michette was a member of the Academic Committee at Cumberland Lodge . He died unexpectedly on May 8, 2013 while attending an event.

Services

Early in his career, Michette was involved in research in the Gargamelle collaboration that led to the discovery of the weak neutral currents and the collaboration being awarded the European Physical Society's 2009 Particle Physics Prize .

In her further professional career Michette turned away from particle physics and, thanks to his work on soft X-rays, gained the reputation of an international authority in this field, both in the field of instrumentation, especially X-ray sources and X-ray optics , as well as with regard to analytical applications radiation, for example for biology or materials science.

Since 2001 Michette has been active in the European COST framework program in several projects ( actions ). From 2002 to 2006 he was chairman of a COST action on the subject of laboratory sources for short-wave radiation ( Short Wavelength Laboratory Sources ). He did not live to see the completion of another action that he was instrumental in bringing to life ( Advanced X-ray spatial and temporal metrology ).

Michette was involved in the organization of several international congresses, including the International Conference on X-ray Microscopy, which took place in London in 1990 under the auspices of his institute. He wrote more than 200 specialist articles, many of them together with his wife Sławka Pfauntsch, and was the co-author and editor of several specialist books.
