Cuangar (more rarely also Kwangar ) is a town in Angola .

geography

Cuangar is about 450 km south of the provincial capital Menongue , on the northeast bank of the Okavango . The Okavango is the border river to the Republic of Namibia to the south of the river ; The Namibian city of Nkurenkuru is located on the directly opposite south-western bank of the river .

history

The city had been an important border post of the Portuguese colonial administration since the end of the 19th century with Fort Cuangar located there . Shortly after the outbreak of World War I, on October 31, 1914, in retaliation for the murder of a group of Germans near Naulila , the attack on the Portuguese fort, organized by police sergeant Oswald Ostermann from the Nkurenkuru police station and later referred to as the Cuangar massacre , took place which killed almost 30 Portuguese and African border guards.

Cuangar was badly damaged by the civil war in Angola (1975-2002), the reconstruction has not yet been completed.

The arid area suffered particularly from the 2013 drought. The border town of Olupale with around 2000 inhabitants is particularly affected. The cattle herders had to sell large parts of their stocks, and the population could only get water in the communal seats of Savate and Caíla and the Cubango river, which passes there, two days' walk away . The children help drive the herds to the river and therefore no longer go to school. The mayor of the district then turned to the central government, since the food reserves and material resources of the district administration were already completely exhausted.

administration

Cuangar is the seat of a district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Cuando Cubango . The district area covers 18,917 km² with around 33,000 inhabitants (2019 estimates). The 2014 census showed 28,459 inhabitants.

The following municipalities (Comunas) are in the district:

traffic

The reconstruction and asphalting of the national road ( Estrada Nacional ) 140 was about to be completed at the end of 2013 on the 116 km long section from Savate to Cuangar, including a 16 km branch to Catuitui on the border with Namibia. For the 143 km long section from Caiundo to Savate, the contracted construction company Consórcio Decar has not yet been able to give a completion date .

Work on the bridge over the Cubango in the district town of Cuangar was also about to be completed at the end of 2013. A quay will also be completed with the bridge , which will serve as an improved landing stage for river navigation. As a replacement for the decrepit transport barges and to improve the inadequate traffic conditions in the region, the eight ships that have already been delivered will be put into operation, which the Ministry of Transport has already made available to the central government out of a total of 56 ships promised.

East of the city is a former military airfield . However, it lies in possibly still mined area and is out of service. However, the place will get a new airport after plans published by the government in 2012 to build five airports in the region.
