WGN America is an American television station that is broadcast over cable. In its history it was already known as WGN (1978–2001), WGN Superstation (2001–2002) and Superstation WGN (2002–2008) until it finally got its current name in 2008. The Chicago- based station was owned by the Tribune Company until 2017 . In spring 2017, the station was taken over by the Sinclair Broadcast Group , which immediately sold all of the station's original series. The reasons given were savings that could not be implemented with costs of up to five million US dollars per episode.

Alignment

Over the years, the station was mainly used for repeating shows such as How I Met Your Mother , 30 Rock , Blue Bloods - Crime Scene New York , Parks and Recreation , Criminal Intent - Verbrechen im Visier , Walker, Texas Ranger , In the Heat of the Night and Rules of Engagement . Since an offensive in 2013, the company has also acquired rights to other series such as Elementary and Person of Interest , to which the company holds exclusive repetition rights in cable television, and announced that it will now also include self-produced series in the program. The first independently commissioned series of the station was the witch drama Salem , the second series was the historical series Manhattan about the research project of the same name . In 2016 the series Outsiders and the slavery drama Underground followed . All self-produced series, with the exception of Salem's , only had a volume of two seasons each and have since been discontinued. In 2017 it was announced that from now on it would only acquire English-language series from abroad that could be bought cheaply. They used the German-Swedish co-production 100 Code , as well as the Canadian productions Bellevue , Shoot the Messenger and Pure , the latter all productions of the broadcaster CBC Television , which each did not reach more than one season. In 2018, Pure, in coproduction with the Canadian Super Channel, was extended for a second season, which will also be broadcast in 2019, as well as the German coproduced television series Gone and the Canadian series Carter , whose broadcasting rights were also acquired in 2018.
