Raus aus Åmål or Show me Love (original title: Fucking Åmål ) is a Swedish - Danish youth film from 1998 . Director Lukas Moodysson's feature film debut was a great commercial success in Northern Europe and won several awards. The main roles are played by Alexandra Dahlström and Rebecka Liljeberg .

action

The teenagers Agnes and Elin both live in the small town of Åmål and couldn't seem more different: while Elin is the most popular and beautiful girl in the school, Agnes has remained an outsider even after the move. At school, the rumor is derogatory that she is a lesbian. In fact, Agnes is secretly in love with Elin. But Elin is also different from her friends. She wants more out of life than what seems possible in Åmål.

After Elin kisses Agnes for a silly wager, she feels guilty and apologizes to her. She quickly developed respect and affection for Agnes, which she had not noticed in school before. But Elin suppresses the possibility of her own homosexuality. Instead, at the insistence of her sister, she hooks up with shy Johan and avoids contact with Agnes. She will soon have her first sexual intercourse with Johan.

Eventually Elin leaves Johan. She pulls Agnes into a school toilet and admits there that she loves her. The conversation is interrupted by friends of Elin who think she is in the bathroom with a boy. Elin and Agnes lock themselves in at first and hesitate to go out. When the pressure rises from the students and teachers gathered in front of the toilet, they decide to confess to their love affair and demonstratively step out holding hands.

History of origin

Lukas Moodysson wrote nine drafts for the script for Raus aus Åmål . With a budget of nine million kroner , the shooting did not take place in Åmål , the location of the film, but in Trollhättan , about 100 kilometers away. Trollhättan is the birthplace of Erica Carlson , Mathias Rust and Stefan Hörberg , who made their acting debut in the film . The two leading actresses had previously gained experience in Swedish feature and television films, but only in supporting roles.

The last scene in which Elin and Agnes drink O'boy cocoa was not originally planned. This scene is followed by the song Show Me Love by the Swedish pop singer Robyn . Songs by the indie rock band Broder Daniel also contributed to the soundtrack .

reception

The film was released in Swedish cinemas on October 23, 1998, where it was seen by over 860,000 people. With a gross profit of 54.37 million crowns by March 31, 1999 in Sweden it was a commercial success. Cinema releases in other European countries followed. In Norway, Raus aus Åmål was the most successful film after Notting Hill in 1999. In Germany, where the film opened on December 22, 1999, 81,569 viewers saw it. In April 2001 it was released in Germany on video and DVD .

Critics received the 89-minute film mostly positively. The two main actresses in particular received praise. The few negative voices criticized, among other things, that the film is too simple and not very profound. The original title was changed to Show Me Love for rental in the English-speaking market .

Reviews

“The likeable debut film is convincing as a sensitive story of adolescent self-discovery. He takes the perspectives of his protagonists seriously and refrains from any judgmental comment. Last but not least, he lives from the lively play of his young leading actresses. "

“In Scandinavia, the funny and touching story of an awakening lesbian love was the hit movie of the year. Lukas Moodysson (script and direction) approaches the needs of his characters very carefully. Alexandra Dahlström (Elin) and Rebecka Liljeberg (Agnes) play simply phenomenal. Gosh! Heartache is rarely presented so fresh and relaxed in the cinema. "

- TV Today

“To say that Fucking Åmål is a film about the life of teenagers in a small Swedish town is like saying that Hamlet is a play about the life of a Danish prince. - Of course that's true, but that's not the point! If that's all you have understood, then you have missed the most important thing. "
