Three Seasons (alternatively: Saigon Stories ) is an American - Vietnamese drama movie from 1999 . Directed by Tony Bui , who wrote the script with Timothy Linh Bui .

action

The episode film shows scenes from Ho Chi Minh City . At the beginning, women are shown selling lotus flowers. They are singing a song by the author Dao, who has been disfigured by an illness.

The rickshaw driver Hai falls in love with the prostitute Lan, who works for the guests of the big hotels. She tells him she won't do this job for long. Hai wins $ 50 in the rickshaw race and wants to spend a day with Lan, but she refuses.

The veteran of the Vietnam War James Hager comes to town to look for his daughter. Hai and his friends mock this plan. Nevertheless, Hager finds his daughter, gives her a bunch of lotus flowers and tries to talk to her.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on May 28, 1999 that some things, such as the romanticized portrayal of prostitution, may be considered politically incorrect in the United States. The film is " extravagantly beautiful ", a " strikingly ambitious " work by the 26-year-old director.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was “ a series of everyday occurrences staged with a light hand and with a clear eye for small gestures and words ”. He conveyed " against the background of the country opening to the West " " an impression of the emerging prosperity gap ".

Awards

Tony Bui won the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize of the Sundance Film Festival in 1999 . Lisa Rinzler won a third prize at the festival for her camera work.
