Journey to the Sun ( Turkish Güneşe Yolculuk ) is a film by Yeşim Ustaoğlu and tells about the friendship between the Turk Mehmet and the Kurd Berzan. The film is a Turkish-Dutch-German coproduction.
action
The main character of the film is the young Turk Mehmet Kara, who comes from Tire in İzmir and has lived in Istanbul for a few months . He works with his teacher, Süleyman Bey, at the waterworks, tracks down broken water pipes and is friends with Arzu.
One night he met Berzan during a fight with hooligans . Berzan is a Kurd who had to leave his village of Zorduç because of a flooding by a reservoir and who has been a hawker in Istanbul for two years. The two become friends.
During a bus ride, Mehmet ran into a police checkpoint and was arrested when a pistol was found on the bus that was left by another passenger. Mehmet is suspected of being a terrorist. The officers also find a Kurdish music cassette - a gift from Berzan - and because of his dark skin color do not believe that he is a Turk from İzmir.
After his release, Mehmet loses his job and apartment and starts looking for Berzan. After he finds him, he moves in with him and works with him in various jobs. He found a golden spray can on a heap of rubbish to lighten his hair so that one would mistake him for a Turk.
Berzan is captured during a demonstration and later murdered. Mehmet makes it his business to bring his body to Berzan's home village near the Iraqi border and to bury it there. With a stolen pickup truck, he travels across the country with the coffin and sees the situation of the people in the east of the country. In Hasankeyf's home, for example, he sees a family who are leaving their home to move to Istanbul, or three little boys who distribute PKK newspapers . On his journey he sees many empty and destroyed houses, the doors of which are marked with a red X. He also noticed the large military presence with many roadside checks and curfews.
Mehmet travels part of the way by train and meets a conscript who is on his way to the barracks. When they ask each other about their hometown, the conscript says that he is from Tire. But Mehmet says that he comes from Zorduç and that he has a friend named Mehmet Kara in Tire. When he arrives in Zorduç, he slides the coffin into the reservoir.
Reviews
The Nürnberger Zeitung wrote:
"She bravely and relentlessly puts her finger in the wound, showing the most depressing conditions with gloomy realism: a topography of terror, fear and misery in Turkey, in which people and culture, landscape and history are abandoned to destruction."
www.kino.de wrote:
“The Turkish-Dutch-German coproduction, which was awarded at the Berlinale, tells of friendship and moral courage. In beautiful pictures by Jacek Petrychi, Krzysztof Kieslowski's cameraman, director Yesim Ustaoglu presents not only a socially engaged, but also a poetic and touching portrait of Turkey. "
After the award ceremony at the 49th Berlinale, Yeşim Ustaoğlu said:
“The system dictates and defines how people should live, I wanted to defend myself against that. The conflicts in the world do not affect all directly. As a result, the unaffected usually do not care much about these problems. When you walk through the streets, just look straight ahead and don't look down at the puddle on the sidewalk, which may reflect other sides of life. In Günese Yolculuk you can see that this all too often overlooked other life takes place right around the corner. "
