Hi-Lo Country (Original title: The Hi-Lo Country , Alternative title: Hi-Lo Country - In the land of the last cowboys ) is an American - British drama directed by Stephen Frears , which was produced in 1998. The plot is based on a novel by Max Evans .

The Cowboys Big Boy Matson and Pete Calder become friends just before the Second World War on. After the war they work for the ranch owner Hoover Young. They compete with Jim Ed Love's large farm, who uses industrial methods to raise cattle.

Both men fall in love with the married Mona Birk, but Mona chooses Big Boy. When Hoover dies, Big Boy takes over his ranch. Eventually Big Boy is shot dead by his younger brother Little Boy, who feels patronized and humiliated by Big Boy. The act is portrayed as self-defense, as Little Boy is the only remaining family member who can still support his mother. Pete Calder threatens Little Boy not to tarnish his brother's memory before he moves to California .
