Katy Jurado (born January 16, 1924 as María Cristina Estela Marcela Jurado de García in Guadalajara , † July 5, 2002 in Cuernavaca ) was a Mexican actress.

Life

Katy Jurado grew up in a wealthy family. At the age of 16, the famous Mexican actor and director Emilio Fernández wanted to hire her for one of his films. Since her family would not allow this, she married the actor Victor Velazquez. She finally played her first film role in 1943. Because of her extraordinary beauty and her acting talent, she was able to establish herself in the Mexican film business and became a star there. She had her breakthrough in Hollywood in 1952 as the hotel owner Helen Ramirez and former lover of Marshal Will Kane ( Gary Cooper ) in the western classic High Noon by Fred Zinnemann . She was nominated for a Golden Globe in two categories for this role and won the Best Supporting Actress award . Her portrayal in High Noon is considered to be groundbreaking in the appreciation that Latin American women have since experienced in Hollywood films. Her acting performance and the great dignity she bestowed on her character changed the previously one-sided image of the “passionate Mexican woman”.

In 1953 she played in Luis Buñuel's drama El Bruto and was honored with the Premio Ariel , the most important Mexican film award. The following year she was nominated for an Oscar as the first Latin American actress for her portrayal as Spencer Tracy's wife in The Broken Lance , in the category Best Supporting Actress. Regardless of her success in the USA, she did not, as was customary at the time, sign a contract with one of the major Hollywood studios; rather, between her roles in Hollywood, she kept going back to her homeland to star in Mexican films. She had in later years appeared in films such as Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid by Sam Peckinpah and John Huston's Under the Volcano . There were also supporting roles on the side of Burt Lancaster , Anthony Quinn , Karl Malden and Elvis Presley , but their heyday was over. In 1997 Jurado received the Mexican Ariel de Oro Film Award for her life's work.

In Mexico, she still took on roles in movies and telenovelas , wrote for newspapers and worked as a radio commentator. She married Ernest Borgnine in 1959 , whom she met while filming Vera Cruz . In 1961 the couple separated and in 1964 they divorced. In her home country, where she received all the major film awards, she died of kidney failure at the age of 78 after a lung disease .
