Vincent and Theo (original title Vincent & Theo ) is a 1990 film by director Robert Altman that focuses on the relationship between the painter Vincent van Gogh and his younger brother, the art dealer Theo van Gogh .
action
The Dutch brothers Vincent Van Gogh and Theo Van Gogh, who lived in Paris in the late 19th century, lead different lives despite the connection between art. Vincent, who adheres to his principles, which include belief in God but not in religion, wants to be a painter and live in misery for his art. Theo, who works in an art gallery, lives for the moment, he sells art that he doesn't particularly like in order to be able to lead a comfortable life. What they have in common is a tendency towards carnal pleasures. Theo does not sell Vincent's pictures because he knows that they are not in demand. Vincent's view of his brother doesn't change when he learns it's Theo and not her father, whom he previously thought was supporting him.
Every brother is a tormented soul - in Vincent's case, it is seen as insane in some circles - which affects the way people deal with their lives. Beyond the various sexual relationships everyone has, it introduces some key moments and longer periods of time in each of their lives in the few years before their respective deaths, including: Theo's struggle with syphilis, which affects how and whether he is sexual Can continue relationships; Theo's superiors allow him to run his own gallery largely on a commission basis, which pushes him further into the area of art sales, which he doesn't like to run; Vincent's time in Provence, which he spends mainly with his painter colleague Paul Gauguin , one of the few other contemporaries he really admires; and Vincent's infamous self-mutilation of his left ear, which resulted in Theo being able to help him over his emotional pain by placing him under the care of Dr. Paul Gachet gave while preoccupying himself with his own tumultuous marriage. This turbulence is largely due to the fact that Vincent is often a third party in their relationship.
background
Originally filmed as a four-hour TV miniseries then almost halved for theater, Vincent and Theo covered most of Van Gogh's professional life from the moment he told his brother he was going to be a painter at the age of 29 about his suicide at the age of 37.
criticism
The lexicon of international film ruled that the film was “[k] a one-dimensional artist biography”, instead “a demanding, disturbing and fascinating examination of reality and the truth of the artistic image”.
