Theodorus (Theo) van Gogh (born May 1, 1857 in Groot-Zundert near Breda , Netherlands ; † January 25, 1891 in Utrecht , Netherlands) was a Dutch art dealer and collector. He was a younger brother of the painter Vincent van Gogh and great-grandfather of the director Theo van Gogh .

Life

Theo van Gogh was born as the son of the pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church , Theodorus van Gogh, and the bookbinder's daughter Anna Cornelia, b. Carbentus (1819-1907), born. In 1873 he began training in the Brussels art dealer Goupil & Cie, of which one of his uncles was a partner. He proved himself and later headed one of the gallery's Paris branches . At a time when they were still fighting for recognition, he campaigned for the sale of images by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists .

Theo van Gogh was best known through his relationship with his four years older brother Vincent van Gogh . For years he supported the commercially unsuccessful painter with regular payments, for which, according to an agreement, he received a large part of his then unsaleable pictures. At the same time he supported the brother with affection and encouragement and was his most important reference person. The extensive correspondence that the brothers conducted from 1872 onwards provides information about Vincent's life as well as his thoughts on painting and is an important source of Van Gogh research.

Theo van Gogh married Johanna Bonger in 1889, and their son Vincent Willem was born a year later . Theo van Gogh's suicide on July 29, 1890 hit Theo van Gogh hard. This marked the beginning of a phase of extensive activities for him: in addition to the funeral, he organized a memorial exhibition (which eventually took place in his apartment) and worked on a book project. In the literature, the resulting revision , in conjunction with an already poor state of health , is cited as the trigger for the mental breakdown that Theo van Gogh suffered in October 1890. His family had him transferred to a mental hospital in Utrecht , where he died on January 25, 1891 at the age of 33 from complications from syphilis . After being reburied, he is now buried by his side in Auvers-sur-Oise near Paris, his brother's last place of residence.
