action
The film tells the story of Bethany Hamilton. Bethany grew up in Hawaii and had already dreamed of becoming a professional surfer as a child. Her professional career seems secure until she is attacked by a tiger shark while surfing at the age of 13 and loses her left arm in the process. She is desperate, but hopes to be able to surf again soon. Three weeks after the accident, she is already back on the surfboard and continues to work on her career. This turns out to be problematic because she has to learn a lot all over again. After failing a competition, she decides to quit surfing. When Bethany travels to Thailand to help the victims of the tsunami , she teaches an orphan to surf and understands that surfing is not the most important thing in life. Encouraged by this, she starts training again to take part in the Nationals. In these, however, it only ranks fifth. A year later, she wins the competition and becomes a professional surfer.
background
The film was produced by Sony, released in over 2000 cinemas in the US and grossed around $ 47 million. In Germany the film was marketed by Walt Disney Productions, but was not a great financial success in the cinemas. The DVD was released in Germany on 7 June 2012. The film is based on the 2006 autobiography Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton , in Germany published the book in the same year.
Reviews
- Patrick Heidmann wrote on CountryMusicNews.de: If “Soul Surfer” didn't come up with a true story and interesting actors like Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt or film debutante Carrie Underwood, this harmless, edifying and very religious water sports biopic would actually not be worth mentioning.
- The film was named best family film of 2011 by Movieguide ahead of Hugo and The Muppets
