Twister is a disaster film from 1996. Directed by Jan de Bont , the screenplay is by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin . Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton play a divorced couple who grow closer through working together.
action
The action begins in June 1969: There a family falls victim to a category F 5 tornado in Tornado Alley, USA . Little JoAnne Thornton has to watch her father die in the tornado.
Years later, Bill Harding returns to his native Oklahoma to divorce his wife, JoAnne Thornton-Harding. The meteorologist now lives with psychologist Melissa Reeves and works as a weather announcer . Previously, he and his research group had developed a new method called DOROTHY for studying tornadoes , and this project is now being led by his future ex-wife. His ambitious and unscrupulous colleague Dr. Jonas Miller seized Harding's work and built his own machine. This is how a race for the first successful field test begins .
Bill rejoins the team around his wife, bringing them closer together again. Melissa Reeves, who is leaving her boyfriend, sees this too. After several attempts to deploy DOROTHY fail, a tornado destroys the city of Wakita . JoAnne's aunt Meg only barely survives. The residents have barely recovered from the shock when a new tornado looms.
JoAnne and Bill forego an evacuation and plan one last attempt with DOROTHY. You can bring the device into the eye of the storm and escape to a shelter. Jonas Miller is also trying to “get his machine to fly” in the tornado. Bill warns Miller about the strength of the tornado, but Miller ignores the warning and dies when he gets too close to the tornado. After the danger is over, the two learn that their action was successful and that important new information for predicting the tornado was gained. They both decide to give their marriage another chance.
Reviews
The film received mostly moderate reviews. The script has been described as boring , predictable, and bumbling . The producers were accused of showmanship .
“Hardly any natural force is as fascinating as a tornado. So it made sense to direct a film about the phenomenon, especially since Michael Crichton (' Jurassic Park ') provided the script. When producer Steven Spielberg also won over ' Speed ' maker Jan De Bont to direct, the box office storm was predetermined despite the superficial characters. Thanks to flying cows and ingenious ILM tricks, the thriller earned $ 500 million and thus gave the go-ahead for a revival of the disaster film. "
“'Twister' is great, effect-oriented action-adventure fun that never really takes itself seriously and therefore got the following age classification in the USA: Rated PG-13 for intense depiction of very bad weather. This intense depiction of the very bad weather turns out to be surprisingly enjoyable and the outrageous story will only cause lasting headaches for those who are suspicious of consistently undemanding popcorn entertainment on principle. "
Awards
Industrial Light and Magic were nominated for an Oscar for their visual effects . There was another nomination in the Best Sound category . Mark Mancina received a BMI Film Music Award .
In the special category Worst Written Films, which grossed over 100 million dollars , the film was awarded the Golden Raspberry in 1997 and Jami Gertz received another nomination for Worst Supporting Actress .
Worth mentioning
- Twister plays u. a. in the small community of Wakita, Oklahoma. Around 500 people live there. The well-known final scene of the film was shot in the town of Eldora , Iowa .
- The film grossed approximately $ 494 million worldwide with a production cost of $ 92 million. In the US, Twister is among the top 100 most successful films.
- Twister was the first film to be released on DVD .
- The tanker truck in the tornado is called Benthic Petroleum , the same name of the oil company in Terminator 2 - Day of Reckoning (tanker truck) and Abyss - Abyss of Death (tanker plane).
- What is noticeable in the film is the excessive product placement by the computer manufacturer Silicon Graphics (SGI), at the time a leader in the field of graphics workstations and supercomputers, which were used to calculate the weather. All computers in the film had to be SGI. This went so far that a laptop dummy was made with very expensive means, since SGI had never manufactured laptops.
- The movie in the drive-in is Shining with Jack Nicholson .
- In 2008 the film was parodied in Disaster Movie .
- The instrument name DOROTHY is an allusion to TOTO (TOtable Tornado Observatory), a real instrument of the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) for tornado investigation. Dorothy and Toto are the main character and their dog in The Wizard of Oz , in which a tornado plays a role.
- Sega built a pinball machine based on the film.
- As a final honor for Bill Paxton, who died on February 25, 2017, tornado hunters in the USA around the town of Wakita marked the initials BP on a weather map using GPS markers . Many storm chasers and meteorologists found themselves inspired by the film Twister .
