from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Severe Storms Laboratory is a research institute based in Norman ( Oklahoma ). The laboratory has its own instruments for researching weather phenomena and wants to find out how tornadoes arise.

history

The National Severe Storms Laboratory emerged in 1964 from the US Weather Bureau's National Severe Storms Project (NSSP). In the following years, research was carried out with Doppler radars , and in 1975 the team developed a color display to simplify the presentation of the results. The projects VORTEX since 1994 and VORTEX2 since 2009 are central. They are used for field research and try to find out the genesis of a tornado. In 2005 the National Weather Festival took place, an event with over 1000 visitors. The NSSL has been present on Facebook and Twitter since 2009 .
