Theodore Tillman Shackelford III (born June 23, 1946 in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma ) is an American actor .

Beginnings

As the eldest son of five siblings, Ted Shackelford spent part of his childhood in Tulsa . The family later had to move to Long Island as his father was posted there in the military. After moving to New York again , the young Ted first came into contact with the world of show business and theater and decided to study acting.

Shackelford moved to Denver , Colorado , and studied at the University of Denver there . During his studies he worked in theater productions such as Night Of The Iguna , Sunday In New York and My Three Angels . Back in New York after graduation, Shackelford took a job as a night porter in order to preserve his financial independence. In 1975 he was finally offered a television role in the soap opera Another World .

Career

His two-year stint on Another World was followed by television roles in the dramas The Defection of Simas Kudirka , The Jordan Chance, and in 1979 in Ebony, Ivory and Jade, as well as guest roles in the television series Big Hawaii and Wonder Woman . In the latter series he was seen alongside actress Joan Van Ark , who helped him get an engagement in the famous soap opera Dallas . There Shackelford was henceforth seen as Gary Ewing , the "black sheep" of the snobbish Ewing clan, and replaced David Ackroyd , who was originally intended for the role, but only played it in a few episodes.

Shackelford's real breakthrough came with the series “ Under the California Sun ” (“Knots Landing”), a spin-off from Dallas . Here he was seen alongside his film partner Joan Van Ark in a leading role and played the role of Gary Ewing for 13 years with great success , who walked a fine line between alcoholism, instability, macho and sensitivity. His interpretation of this role earned him a 1986 nomination for the Audience Award Soap Opera Digest Awards for the most popular leading actor in a prime-time series.

In the meantime, Shackelford was repeatedly seen in various television films and in smaller films. He preferred to play body-hugging roles, such as a saving hero and sometimes with a bare upper body, etc. a. in Summer Fantasy and in Boone - one villain among villains . Ted Shackelford has been married to Annette Wolfe from Denmark since October 5, 1991 . Previously, he was in a relationship with his colleague Teri Austin from Knots Landing and was married to Janis Leverenz in his first marriage (1976–1987).
