Shadow of Passion (Original title: The Young and the Restless ) is an American soap opera that takes place in the fictional city of Genoa City in Wisconsin . It has been broadcast on the American network CBS since March 26, 1973 . The series was invented by William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell, who fourteen years later also created the sister soap opera Reich und Schön . Since 1988, Shadow of Passion has been the most successful daily soap opera on US television.

background

Genoa City, Wisconsin - The metropolis of the American Midwest cannot be found in any atlas and yet it is known to a worldwide television audience. It is the fictional setting of the most successful daily soap in the USA for 25 years: The Young and the Restless . A microcosm of characters, regardless of skin color or origin, lives in Genoa City. Here loved ones were found and lost, marriages entered into and broken, children born and grown up and all of this in front of the watchful eyes of the 5 million daily US viewers who are still watching today. All of this began on March 26, 1973, when CBS broadcast the very first episode of Shadows of Passion , which was still 30 minutes long . From the pen of the already legendary soap opera writer William J. Bell, who was to deliver his masterpiece with the series, and his wife the journalist Lee Phillip Bell, the idea for a new drama series, the aim of which was social and medical developments, arose and discussion that moved people to incorporate, but at the same time to be ahead of all other daily soaps. This was reflected in noble production standards, which are worthy of a prime time series, and they showed very daring love stories for the time, led by young and passionate characters - true to the series title. Less than 2 years after the start of the series, Shadows of Passion received the first in a series of many Daytime Emmys as ' Best Series '. In 2013 Shadow of Passion celebrated its 40th birthday and over 10,000 episodes have been filmed. The great reliability that the majority of the characters have been part of the ensemble for several decades and are still the focal point of the series is one of the hallmarks of the series. It has been named ' Best Series ' 7 times, and since then the series has received the incredible number of 111 Emmys out of 334 nominations, more than any other series before.

Broadcast history

Since the series premiere on March 26, 1973, the series runs in the United States on CBS, where it replaced the daily soap Where the Heart Is (1969-1973). The regular broadcasting slot is 12:30 p.m. noon, but in some broadcasting areas of the USA the series does not run until 4:00 p.m., which is a significantly higher-audience slot than the other daily soaps. Due to the great success already in the 1970s, series creator Bell was quickly pressured to extend the broadcasting time of the series, which only took place after long resistance on February 4, 1980, when many other soap operas had already switched to the hourly format. The number of viewers continued to rise and from December 1988 General Hospital was overtaken as the most watched soap opera. Even if the number of viewers has now dropped from just under 10 million to 5 to 6 million a day, the series continues to be the core pillar of CBS's Daytime program. In the 1990s, 4 primetime specials were broadcast on CBS , which were designed in the style of regular evening programs with sometimes complex outdoor shoots and plot highlights such as the 1996 episode in which Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) was shot. It was broadcast on March 3, 1994, October 26, 1995 (this episode was broadcast in Germany), May 22, 1996 (this episode was broadcast in Germany) and on March 10, 1998.

Outside the US, The Young and the Restless a . a. still in the UK , Switzerland , Norway , Australia and France , where Les Feux de l'Amour is the most successful soap opera, similar to the USA.

In Germany, the private broadcaster Sat.1 broadcast Shadow of Passion from January 4, 1993 to December 1994, beginning with episode # 3263 from 1986. After that, there was a very long break on free German television.

At the end of the 1990s there was a sequel in pay TV on DF1 , so a total of 1,000 episodes from the production years 1986 to 1989 were broadcast in Germany. From 2000 to 2002, the special interest channel Sunset of the pay-TV channel Premiere broadcast another 520 episodes from 1995 to 1997. The last time Premiere broadcast some episodes of the series from January 3, 2005 to December 29, 2006, this time as a repetition of the episodes that ran on Sat.1 in 1993.

The ZDF continued the broadcast of Shadows of Passion from March 3, 2008 with episode # 8279, which ran in December 2005 in the USA, as an attempt to establish a US soap opera block in the program with an episode from now on, Reich und Schön . Since an episode lasts around 40 minutes in the original, it was split in two and broadcast on weekdays from 11:35 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Due to poor audience ratings, the ZDF broadcast the series from May 29, 2008 in double episodes in the night program and instead of the originally planned 200 episodes only 100 were dubbed. The broadcast ended on December 20, 2008.

history

In the early years, the series was about the Foster and Brooks families. William and Elizabeth Foster had three children: Snapper, Greg, and Jill. While the Fosters were a poor family, the Brooks were wealthy. Stuart and Jennifer Brooks had four daughters: Leslie, Chris, Peggy and Lauralee, nicknamed Lorie. The two families met again and again and over the years more and more conflicts arose. Since 1980, when "Shadow of Passion" was extended to 60 minutes due to its great success, the Newman families around women magnet and tycoon Victor Newman (the German-born Eric Braeden) and Abbott around cosmetics entrepreneur John Abbott (Jerry Douglas) moved in, who up to determine everyday serial production today. Victor Newman and former stripper Nikki Reed (Melody Thomas Scott) became one of the most popular dream couples on US TV and the rivalry between arch enemies Abbott heir Jack Abbott (1st cast: Terry Lester, 2nd cast: Peter Bergman) and Victor Newman or the family business 'Jabot Cosmetics' and the conglomerate 'Newman Enterprises' is legendary. All of this, however, is surpassed by the longest-running enmity in television history, whose origins lie in the early years of "Shadows of Passion". It is a struggle for men, money and recognition that has been pursued to the extreme by two dissimilar women for decades.

In the fall of 1973, a wealthy lady of the world named Katherine Chancellor appeared in Genoa City, who decisively shaped the development of the series and was played by Jeanne Cooper until her death in 2013. Katherine Chancellor was lonely and so she hired the young manicure Jill Foster (1st & 3rd cast: Brenda Dickson, 2nd cast Deborah Adair, 4th cast: Jess Walton) as her companion. At that time nobody could have guessed in which ways fate would connect the two women. Surrounded by Katherine's husband Phillip Chancellor, who no longer loved his drinking wife, Jill got involved with her boss's husband. Katherine felt betrayed and, under the constant influence of her drinking addiction, she wanted to prevent their marriage from falling apart. Then one day a disaster strikes and Katherine causes a car accident in which Phillip is seriously injured. Jill is certain that Katherine Phillip was after life. Especially after Katherine had Jill's marriage to Phillip, which was signed on his deathbed, invalidated and their son Phillip Chancellor III was born without any claim to his father's inheritance! The enmity between Katherine and Jill was born and reignited over the years. Be it out of an interest in the same men, in the struggle for custody of young Phillip, and finally for the Chancellor estate. The greater the shock when it turns out after 30 years that Katherine is Jill's birth mother. Even after this unexpected development, it takes years for the rivals to make peace. Eventually it is revealed that Katherine and Jill are not related after all, but by this point the women have long since made their (un) peace with each other. From time to time the old enmity flares up again, but in 40 years a bond developed that was only broken by Katherine's serial death in September 2013.

With Nicholas (Joshua Morrow), Victoria (1st cast: Heather Tom, 2nd cast: Amelia Heinle), Adam (1st cast: Chris Engen, 2nd cast Michael Muhney) and Billy (1st and 5th cast: David Tom, 2nd cast: Ryan Brown, 3rd cast Scott Seymour, 4th cast: Billy Miller) the focus is now on the second generation of the Newmans and Abbotts and their children. In the Afro-American Winters family around Neil (Kristoff St. John) and Drucilla (Victoria Rowell), the now grown daughter Lilly (1st & 3rd cast: Christel Khalil, 2nd cast: Davetta Sherwood) and adoptive brother Devon Hamilton (Bryton McClure) the era continues. Lauren Fenmore married in 2005 into the family of the lawyer Michael Baldwin (Christian LeBlanc) around mother Gloria Fisher (1st cast: Joan Van Ark, 2nd cast: Judith Chapman) and brother Kevin (Greg Rikaart). Today everything in Genoa City revolves around the great feelings and the shadow of passion: It's about family, love and the struggle for power, which is often accompanied by intrigue.

The character of Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown), who truly wrote history, was also at home with Schatten der passion (later also with Reich und Schön ). In 1990 she accepted a position as a nurse at Memorial Hospital in Genoa City. There Sheila falls in love with the doctor Scott Grainger on the spot. When the crisis in his marriage to Lauren Fenmore (Tracey E. Bregman) begins, Sheila tries everything to destroy this alliance. One day, under the influence of medication, Sheila seduces Scott and promptly becomes pregnant. He and Lauren reconcile, but after Scott learns of Sheila's pregnancy, he divorces her out of a sense of duty and marries Sheila. At the same time, Lauren becomes pregnant by Scott, but she hides this from her husband. Sheila later miscarries, but keeps it a secret from Scott. She immediately contacts a man who is supposed to illegally get another baby for her. She later exchanges this for Lauren's baby in the hospital and gives Lauren's child as her own, which she now calls Scotty Junior. Meanwhile, Lauren's supposed son Dylan dies before his first birthday. Later, however, Lauren learns the truth from Sheila's mother Molly and thus gets her real son back. This creates a hatred for years between the two. This comes to an end in February 2007 when Sheila (who now looks like Lauren's good friend Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) through plastic surgery) kidnapped Lauren's second child Fenmore along with Phyllis and their daughter Summer. Lauren can find out the whereabouts of Sheila and there is a final showdown in which Lauren has to decide who Sheila and who is Phyllis. She then shoots one of them who is actually Sheila. With the words "You'll never get rid of me" she finally dies.
