Shemar Franklin Moore (born April 20, 1970 in Oakland , California ) is an American actor .

Life

Moore was born in Oakland, California to an African-American father and a white mother. At the beginning of the 1970s, there were still strong reservations about multiracial relationships in the USA. His mother raised him alone and wanted to see him grow up in a less racist environment. She went overseas with him and taught math and English there.

Moore lived in many places. Moore spent the first six years of his life abroad. He lived in Denmark until he was three years old, then in Bahrain for three years. As a toddler he spoke Danish. He didn't learn English until he was five or six years old. His mother sent him to a British private school to facilitate his return to the United States.

Moore and his mother returned to their hometown of Boston at the age of about seven , after which he moved to Chico, California , and then to Palo Alto, California , where he spent much of his high school years.

The Emmy Award winner , who previously worked as a photo model, became known for the role of Malcolm Winter in the soap opera Shadow of Passion and for the series Soul Train , which he hosted from 1999 to 2003. From 2005 to 2016 he starred as agent Derek Morgan in the television series Criminal Minds for eleven seasons . He is intensely committed to the fight against multiple sclerosis , which his mother also suffered from. She died in February 2020, at the age of 76.
