Chico is a town ( city ) in Butte County in the US state of California , United States , with 91,567 inhabitants (2016). The urban area has a size of 71.9 km².

The city was founded in 1860 by General John Bidwell . Until 1977, the Hooker oak was one of the largest oaks in the USA in Chico .

As a result of the Camp Fire at the end of 2018, Chico became a refuge for residents of places badly affected by the fire, such as Paradise . In the immediate aftermath, several tent cities were built for homeless residents of the region. In January 2019, Chico was considered the hottest real estate market in the US because a large number of the victims had received funding commitments from their insurance companies, but no longer wanted to live in the small towns affected, but saw their future in the next largest city. It was assumed that there would be up to 20,000 additional permanent residents.
