Matt Lucena (born August 4, 1969 in Chico , California ) is a retired American tennis player . In 1995 he won the US Open in mixed alongside Meredith McGrath .

Life

Lucena was an outstanding junior player. During his political science studies at the University of California, Berkeley between 1988 and 1992, he won the double title of the National Collegiate Athletic Association twice in a row and was nominated three times in the top selection All-American . He also won five national double titles.

At the side of Steve DeVries he was still able to win his first double title as an amateur at the Challenger tournament in Bloomfield Hills ; In 1992 he became a professional tennis player. However, he was initially unable to build on his success and had to play in lower-class satellite tournaments until mid-1993 in order to collect world ranking points. Only in September 1993 he reached a double final of the Challenger Tour, but this was lost. The following year was also mixed, the best result here was a double final at the Challenger tournament in Guayaquil . The best year of his career was to be 1995, when, in addition to three double titles on the Challenger Tour, he also won the ATP tournament in St. Pölten . In the course of his career he was able to win a total of four double titles on the ATP Challenger Tour and one on the ATP World Tour. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1993 with position 312 in singles and in 1996 with position 62 in doubles.

In the individual, he could never qualify for a Grand Slam tournament. In the doubles competition reached the quarterfinals of the US Open twice. He celebrated his greatest career success in mixed competition, where he won the title at the US Open in 1995 alongside Meredith McGrath. They beat Gigi Fernández and Cyril Suk in two sets in the final . Together they also made it to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and the second round of the French Open .
