Nicola Dickson Sauvage "Niki" Tsongas (born April 26, 1946 in Chico , California ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . She has represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives since 2007 .

Family, education and work

Nicola Dickson Sauvage, her maiden name, attended Narimasu American High School in Japan until 1964 , where her father was stationed as a soldier in the United States Air Force . She later studied at Michigan State University in East Lansing and then until 1968 at Smith College in Northampton . After completing a law degree at Boston University and being admitted to the bar, she began working in this profession. In the meantime she also worked as a social worker. Between 1997 and 2007 she was the External Affairs Director at Middlesex Community College .

She married Congressman and later Senator Paul Tsongas (1941–1997).

Political career

After the resignation of MP Marty Meehan , Niki Tsongas was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the due by-election for the 5th Congressional District of Massachusetts , where she took up her new mandate on October 16, 2007. After she was confirmed in the following elections, including the one in 2016, she can continue to exercise her mandate in Congress today. Since 2013 she has represented the 3rd congressional electoral district of her state since the electoral districts were redesigned in 2012. She was a member of the Budget Committee and the Armed Forces Committee . She later resigned from the Budget Committee and instead became a member of the Natural Resources Committee. But she remained a member of the Armed Forces Committee.

Tsongas has announced that he will no longer apply in the 2018 election , but will withdraw from politics. Your mandate ends on January 3, 2019.
