Philip Joseph Philbin (born May 29, 1898 in Clinton , Worcester County , Massachusetts , †  June 14, 1972 in Bolton , Massachusetts) was an American politician . Between 1943 and 1971 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Philip Philbin attended public schools in his home country. During the First World War , he served in the US Navy from 1917 to 1919 . After the war he continued his education until 1920 with a study at Harvard University . After studying law at Columbia University in New York City and being admitted to the bar in 1924, he began to work in this profession, first in Boston and later in his hometown of Clinton. Philbin also worked in real estate, fuel trading and agriculture. Between 1921 and 1940 he worked at times in various functions for US Senator David I. Walsh . From 1934 to 1936 he was an advisor to the Senate Committee on Education and Labor. He then worked for the US Department of Labor until 1937 . Between 1937 and 1940, Philbin served as an advisor to the Massachusetts Unemployment Compensation Commission. In 1935 he was also named city treasurer in Clinton.

Politically, Philbin was a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1942 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Joseph E. Casey on January 3, 1943 . After 13 re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 14 legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1971 . His time in Congress saw the end of World War II , the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement . In addition, the Vietnam War began at that time . In 1970 and 1971 he chaired the Armed Forces Committee .

In 1970 Philbin failed in his party's primary election. He died on June 14, 1972 at his Philcrest Farms estate in Bolton.
