Peter Gerard Torkildsen (born January 28, 1958 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is an American politician . Between 1993 and 1997 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Peter Torkildsen attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst until 1980 . He then studied political science until 1990 at the John F. Kennedy School of Government , which is part of Harvard University . Between 1982 and 1984 Torkildsen worked as coordinator for the Visiting Nurse Association in Boston . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1985 and 1990 he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives . In 1988, 1996 and 2008 he was a delegate to the respective Republican National Conventions . From 1991 to 1992 he was Massachusetts State Commissioner for Labor and Industry.

In the 1992 congressional election , Torkildsen was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Nicholas Mavroules on January 3, 1993 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until January 3, 1997 . He was considered a rather conservative MP.

In 1996 Peter Torkildsen was not re-elected. Two years later, he failed with another congressional candidacy. Between 2001 and 2003 he was a member of the Massachusetts Labor Relations Commission . He then served as executive director of the Workforce Investment Board in Massachusetts. Between 2007 and 2009 he was chairman of the Republican Party at the state level. Otherwise he works as a private businessman.
