Frederick H. Gillett

Frederick Huntington Gillett (born October 16, 1851 in Westfield , Hampden County , Massachusetts , †  July 31, 1935 in Springfield , Massachusetts) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of Massachusetts in both chambers of Congress .

Life

Gillett studied at Amherst College and Harvard Law School Law . He began practicing law in Springfield in 1877. From 1879 to 1882 he was Assistant Attorney General of Massachusetts. He served two terms in the Massachusetts House of Representatives before being elected to the 53rd United States Congress.

He served in the United States House of Representatives from 1893 to 1925 and then in the US Senate from 1925 to 1931 . As spokesman for the House of Representatives , he was the chairman of this parliamentary chamber from 1919 to 1925.

In 1915, Christine Rice married Gillett Hoar, the widow of his former colleague Rockwood Hoar .
