John W. Taylor

John W. Taylor (born March 26, 1784 in Charlton , Saratoga County , New York , † September 18, 1854 in Cleveland , Ohio ) was an American politician and from 1820 to 1821 and from 1825 to 1827 two-time Speaker of the House of Representatives .

Early years

Taylor was home-schooled but graduated from Union College in Schenectady in 1803 . He studied law and was admitted in 1807. He then worked as a lawyer for a while . In 1812 and 1813 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . He was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1813 .

politics

Taylor was elected a Democratic Republican in the 13th and the next four subsequent Congresses in 1813 . In the three subsequent congresses, the 18th to the 20th (1823-1829), he was elected as Adams Clay Republican, then followed two terms (1829-1833) as a member of the National Republican Party . The last two parties are no different, just had different names during their brief existence. In total, he sat in Congress for 20 years . In the 16th and 19th he was Speaker of the House of Representatives . In the election to the 23rd Congress in 1832 he was not re-elected and then continued his work as a lawyer.

Late years

After losing the election, Taylor moved to Ballston Spa in Saratoga County to go back to work as a lawyer, as he had done before his political career. He was a member of the New York State Senate in 1840 and 1841, but resigned in 1841 as a consequence of a stroke . In 1843 he moved to Cleveland, where he died on September 18, 1854. He is buried in City Cemetery in Ballston Spa.
