John Mosher Bailey

John Mosher Bailey (born August 24, 1838 in Bethlehem , New York , † February 21, 1916 in Albany , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1878 and 1881 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Mosher Bailey was born and raised in Bethlehem approximately eight years before the outbreak of the Mexican-American War . He attended public schools and the Hudson River Institute in Claverack , Columbia County . In 1861 he graduated from Union College in Schenectady . During the civil war he enlisted in the Union Army . Bailey held the rank of first lieutenant and served as an adjutant in the 177th  regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry . In 1862 he was assigned to the Department of the Gulf . He graduated from Albany Law School in 1864 . He was admitted to the bar that same year and then began practicing in Albany. Between 1865 and 1867 he was Assistant District Attorney in Albany County . He worked as a tax collector between 1871 and 1874. Between 1874 and 1877 he was a district attorney in Albany County.

Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . He was elected in a by-election on November 5, 1878 in the 16th electoral district of New York to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , to fill the vacancy created by the death of Terence J. Quinn . He was elected to the 46th Congress . Since he on a run again in 1880 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1881 Congress of.

President James A. Garfield appointed him US consul in Hamburg - a position he held between 1881 and 1885. In 1888 he participated as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Chicago . President Benjamin Harrison appointed him Surveyor of Customs in Albany. He held the post between 1889 and 1894. Then he went back to his activity as a lawyer. He died on February 21, 1916 in Albany and was then buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Bethlehem.
