William Collins

William Collins (born February 22, 1818 in Lowville , New York , † June 18, 1878 in Cleveland , Ohio ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1847 and 1849 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Ela Collins was his father.

Career

William Collins was born in Lowville, Lewis County , about three years after the end of the British-American War . He studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Lowville. Between 1845 and 1847 he was a district attorney in Lewis County. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1846 congressional elections for the 30th Congress , Collins was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 18th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Preston King on March 4, 1847 .
