William Donnison Ford

William Donnison Ford (born October 31, 1779 in Providence , Rhode Island , † October 1, 1833 in Sackets Harbor , Jefferson County , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1819 and 1821 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

The place of birth of William Ford is given differently in the sources. In addition to Providence, his birthplace listed above, he could also have been born in Herkimer County , New York State. What is certain is that he grew up in Fairfield, Herkimer County, and went to school there. After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1809, he began to practice in Fairfield in his new profession. From 1817 he lived and practiced in Watertown, Jefferson County, New York State. In the meantime he was also active as a judge on the Supreme Court in 1817.

Politically, Ford joined the Democratic Republican Party . He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1816 and 1817 . In the congressional election of 1818 he was elected as a candidate for his party in the 18th electoral district of New York state in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded David A. Ogden on March 4, 1819 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1820, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 4, 1821 .

After serving as a congressman, William Ford continued his practice as a lawyer. In the meantime, he was also a District Attorney in Jefferson County, where he also held the position of Master of Chancery . In 1827 he became mayor of the Watertown Ward. Around 1830 he moved to Sacketts Harbor, where he spent his old age. He died there on October 1, 1833.
