history

Sackets Harbor was founded in 1801 by landowner Augustus Sacket and was the most important settlement in the region until Watertown was founded. Its location as a port on Lake Ontario and the confluence of the Black River made the place a trading center between the economy on the Great Lakes and the largely undeveloped northeastern hinterland of New York. From 1810 the Black River was opened up to the waterway to Brownville; at the same time, the port was expanded into a military base with a view to the nearby Canadian border. In the war of 1812 with Great Britain , Sackets Harbor was of great strategic importance as a naval base for the US Navy and the center of the construction of warships under the shipbuilder Henry Eckford ; it became the headquarters of the Americans' Northern Fleet. In 1812 the Americans fended off a first attack by British warships, in 1813 the defenders under General Jacob Brown were able to prevent the capture of the place through a large-scale but half-hearted British landing operation under the command of Commodore Sir James Lucas Yeo and the Canadian Governor General Sir George Prevost . Nevertheless, the attackers managed to cause great damage and set the shipbuilding back considerably. The Battle of Sackets Harbor was then and is sometimes falsely portrayed as a great American success. During the fighting, the American explorer and officer Zebulon Pike was killed and buried there.

After the end of the hostilities between the Americans and the Canadian British, several military bases, in particular Fort Drum and Waterbury, were connected with roads with Sackets Harbor by order of the then President of the United States, Monroe; the implementation was completed in 1821 and emphasized the military importance of the port. The start of steamboat traffic on the St. Lawrence River, which rises from Lake Ontario a few kilometers north of the town, with Sackets Harbor as the central port for connecting river shipping lines and shipping on the Great Lakes from 1816 also led to an economic development of the town.

In 1864, during the American Civil War , the 186th Regiment, 980 in strength, who had been enlisted in Jefferson County and Lewis Counties, was established in Sackets Harbor as a base. The regiment entered service on September 8, 1864 and was used in the storm of Petersburg. 730 soldiers returned; 130 had fallen, 120 died from illness and wounds. The regiment was decommissioned on June 2, 1865. In addition, the 26th Cavalry Regiment, which secured the northern border against troublemakers, was stationed in Sackets Harbor. It was built from December 29, 1864 and dissolved again by July 7, 1865.

From around 1890 onwards, Sackets Harbor shipbuilding and the military port became less important; today there is nothing left of it. Sackets Harbor lives primarily on tourism and its for Marina converted harbor.

Religions

Today there are three parishes with their own houses in the village: the Christ Episcopal Church , the Saint Andrews Catholic Church and the United Presberytian Church .

The rise of Watertown to the largest city in Jefferson Counties was accompanied by a sharp increase in the number of newspapers that had appeared there since 1809; from around 1830 Watertown replaced the former media stronghold Sackets Harbor. With the advent of the telegraph in the course of railway construction from around the middle of the 1840s, their number was initially slowly reduced, and with the spread of the radio from around 1920, it was increasingly reduced.
