John M. Murphy (1975)

John Michael Murphy (born August 3, 1926 in Staten Island , New York , † May 25, 2015 there ) was an American officer and politician . Between 1963 and 1981 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Michael Murphy attended public schools in New York City, the La Salle Military Academy in Oakdale , the College in Amherst ( Massachusetts ) and the United States Military Academy in West Point . During the Second World War he enlisted in the army as a private in August 1944 . He was promoted to corporal in September 1944 and received an officer license to second lieutenant in May 1945 .

In July 1946 he was called to West Point, where he graduated in June 1950. He took part in the Korean War, where he served as platoon leader , company commander and intelligence officer in the 9th  Infantry Regiment . He was promoted to First Lieutenant in October 1950 and Captain in October 1953 . In July 1956 he retired from the army. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Bronze Star with V and Oak Leaves.

Between 1956 and 1962 he worked as a managing director and contract freight forwarder in Staten Island. He was President of Cleveland General Transport Co., Inc.

Political career

As a delegate he took part in the Democratic National Conventions in 1964, 1968 and 1976 , and in 1967 at the New York Constituent Assembly . In the 1962 congressional elections for the 88th Congress , Murphy was elected to the House of Representatives in the 16th  electoral district of New York, where he succeeded Adam Clayton Powell junior on January 4, 1963 . He was re-elected four times in a row. In 1972 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the 17th electoral district of New York, where he succeeded Ed Koch on January 4, 1973 , and was able to maintain the mandate three times in a row. In 1980 he suffered a defeat when running again and resigned from Congress on January 3, 1981 . As a Congressman, he chaired the Select Committee on the Outer Continental Shelf (Ad Hoc) ( 94th to 96th Congress ) and the Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries ( 95th and 96th Congress ).

After his time at the Congress, he worked as an investor and developer for biotechnology and high-tech companies. He lived in Staten Island.
