James J. Murphy
James Joseph Murphy (born November 3, 1898 in Brooklyn , New York , † October 19, 1962 in Staten Island , New York) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1953 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
James Joseph Murphy was born about two months after the end of the Spanish-American War in the then separate city of Brooklyn. He attended public schools on Staten Island. In 1916 he served as a non-commissioned officer in the First New York Cavalry on the Mexican border. During the First World War he was a sergeant in the 104th Machine Gun Battalion of the 27th Division between 1918 and 1920 and served in France and Belgium during this time . He had been in import and export transportation business in New York City since 1920.
Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the 1948 congressional elections for the 81st Congress , Murphy was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Ellsworth B. Buck on January 4, 1949 . After a successful re-election he suffered in 1952 at his renewed candidacy defeat and withdrew from the after January 3, 1953 Congress of.
Between 1954 and 1958 he was a city councilman of New York in the borough of Staten Island. Murphy was a freight and transportation broker. He lived in Grymes Hill . He died on October 19, 1962 in Staten Island. His body was buried in St. Peter's Cemetery .
