Nita Lowey Melnikoff (* 5. July 1937 in New York City ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party and since 1989 a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the State of New York .

biography

Lowey was born in the Bronx , New York . She graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a bachelor's degree . She held various government roles before being elected to the US House of Representatives.

In the 1988 congressional elections , she was first elected to the House of Representatives for the 20th  congressional district. As she was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, she can continue to exercise her mandate today. Their latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019. As a result of the restructuring of the New York state constituencies, the numbering of their constituencies has changed several times over the years. Therefore she represented the 20th constituency of her state until 1993 and then the 18th constituency until 2013. She has represented the 17th electoral district since 2013. During her time as Congresswoman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . Lowey is or was a member of the Grants Committee ( Ranking Member ) and in three of its subcommittees. She also belongs to several caucuses.

Nita Lowey has been married to Stephen for over 40 years. They both have 3 children and several grandchildren. They live in Harrison , Westchester County. Lowey is of Jewish faith .
