John E. Sweeney (2006)

John E. Sweeney (born August 9, 1955 in Troy , New York ) is an American politician . Between 1999 and 2007 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1973, John Sweeney graduated from Troy's Lansingburgh High School . After that he was at Hudson Valley Community College until 1978 . Finally, he attended Russell Sage College in his hometown of Troy until 1981 . In 1990 he was awarded the Juris Doctor at the Law School of the Western New England University in Springfield ( Massachusetts ). Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Between 1992 and 1995 he served as Executive Director & Chief Counsel on his party's State Board for New York; from 1995 to 1997 he was Minister of Labor under Governor George Patacki and then until 1998 Deputy Minister of the Governor.

In the 1998 congressional election , Sweeney was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 22nd  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Gerald BH Solomon on January 3, 1999 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 2007 . Since 2003 he has represented the 20th district of his state there. During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . Among other things, he was against a law on private gun control and environmental protection measures.

Sweeney's career has not been free of controversy. In 2006, the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) published their second annual report, which listed the 20 most corrupt members of Congress according to their research. Sweeney was also included on that list. Among other things, he was accused of an expensive ski trip at state expense. The report also criticized irregularities in his campaign financing and the paid work of his wife to raise campaign funds. In October 2006, Sweeney hit the headlines for using domestic violence against his wife. Later he was also noticed for a number of traffic offenses. He was also said to have connections to the investment fraudster Allen Stanford . In 2006 he was not re-elected and lost with 47% of the vote against the Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand .

Sweeney is divorced twice. He has three children from his first marriage.
