John C. Churchill
John Charles Churchill (born January 17, 1821 in Mooers , New York , † June 4, 1905 in Oswego , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1867 and 1871 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Charles Churchill was born in Clinton County about six years after the end of the British-American War . He attended Burr Seminary in Manchester ( Vermont ) and then graduated in 1843 at Middlebury College . He then taught as a language teacher at Castleton Seminary and was a tutor at Middlebury College . He attended the Dane Law School of Harvard University . After receiving his license to practice as a lawyer in 1847, he began practicing in Oswego in 1848. Between 1853 and 1856 he sat on the Oswego Education Committee. During that time he served on the Oswego County County Council in 1854 and 1855 . In 1857 he became prosecuting attorney - a post he held until 1860. Then he was a judge in Oswego County between 1860 and 1864. His judicial time was overshadowed by the civil war. Governor Edwin D. Morgan appointed him commissioner who oversaw the sketching of Oswego County in 1862 and 1863. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .
In the congressional elections of 1866 for the 40th Congress , Churchill was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 22nd constituency of New York , where he succeeded Sidney T. Holmes on March 4, 1867 . He was re-elected once and then dropped out after the March 3, 1871 Congress of. During his final tenure, he chaired the Committee on Expenditures on Public Buildings .
Churchill attended the Republican National Convention in Cincinnati in 1876 as a delegate . In 1877 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of Secretary of State of New York. He was back on the Oswego Education Committee and was its president in 1879 and 1880. To fill a vacancy on the New York Supreme Court , he was appointed associate judge on January 17, 1881. Churchill was then elected to the office and held it until reaching the age limit on December 31, 1891. He died about nine years before the outbreak of World War I in Oswego and was then buried in Riverside Cemetery .
