Jacob H. Gilbert

Jacob H. Gilbert (born June 17, 1920 in New York City , † February 27, 1981 in Bronx , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1960 and 1971 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jacob H. Gilbert attended public schools. He graduated from St. John's College and St. John's Law School . After receiving his license to practice law in 1944, he began practicing in New York City. He was named Deputy Corporation Counsel of New York City - a post he held from January 1949 to December 1950. Between 1951 and 1954 he was a member of the New York State Assembly and from 1955 to March 1960 he was a member of the New York Senate . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

He was elected to the 86th Congress in a by-election in the 23rd  constituency of New York to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Isidore Dollinger . He took his seat in the US House of Representatives on March 8, 1960. In the 1960 congressional elections for the 87th Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the 22nd constituency of New York, where he succeeded James C. Healey on January 4, 1961 . He was re-elected four times in a row. When he ran for re-election in 1970 , he suffered a defeat and resigned from Congress on January 3, 1971 .

After his time at the congress he worked as a lawyer again. He lived in the Bronx, where he died on February 27, 1981. His body was then interred in Mount Hebron Cemetery in Flushing .
