Freeborn Garrettson Jewett (born August 4, 1791 in Sharon , Connecticut , † January 27, 1858 in Skaneateles , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1831 and 1833 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Freeborn Garrettson Jewett was born in Litchfield County about eight years after the Revolutionary War ended . He pursued an academic career. In 1815 he moved to Skaneateles. Jewett was Justice of the Peace in 1817. He studied law . After receiving his license to practice as a lawyer in 1818, he began to practice in Skaneateles. Between 1824 and 1831 he was the guardianship and probate judge in Onondaga County . During this time he was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1826 . Politically, he belonged to the Jacksonian faction.

In the 1830 congressional elections for the 22nd Congress , Jewett was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 23rd  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Jonas Earll, Jr. on March 4, 1831 . Since he on a run again in 1832 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1833 Congress of.

He served as a warden at Auburn Prison in 1838 and 1839 . In 1839 he became a district attorney in Onondaga County. On March 5, 1845, he was appointed associate judge on the New York Supreme Court . He was elected a judge at the New York Court of Appeals in 1847 and re-elected in 1849, although he resigned in June 1853 for health reasons. Between 1847 and 1850 he held the post of Chief Justice at this court. He died in Skaneateles about three years before the outbreak of the Civil War and was then buried in Lake View Cemetery .
