William Taylor (politician, 1791)

William Taylor (born October 12, 1791 in Suffield , Connecticut , † September 16, 1865 in Manlius , New York ) was an American doctor and politician . Between 1833 and 1839 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Taylor was born in Hartford County about eight years after the Revolutionary War ended . The family moved to Onondaga County . There he attended public schools. He studied medicine and then practiced as a doctor. Politically, he belonged to the Jacksonian faction at that time . In the 1832 congressional elections for the 23rd Congress , Taylor was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 23rd  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Freeborn G. Jewett on March 4, 1833 . He was re-elected twice in a row. BothHowever , he ran for the Democratic Party in the 1836 congressional elections . He then resigned from Congress on March 3, 1839 . During his final tenure, he chaired the Committee on Invalid Pensions . After his time at Congress he went back to his work as a doctor. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1841 and 1842 . In 1846 he took part as a delegate to the New York Constituent Assembly . He died in Manlius about three months after the end of the civil war . His body was then interred in Christ Church Cemetery .
