George J. Smith

George Joseph Smith (born November 7, 1859 in Kingston , New York , † December 24, 1913 in Atlantic City , New Jersey ) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1905 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Joseph Smith was born in Ulster County about two years before the civil war broke out . He attended public schools. He then went into banking, but also worked as a manufacturer in New York City and Kingston. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . In 1898 he chaired the Republican County Committee and in 1899 he was treasurer of the Republican State Committee . In the 1902 congressional election for the 58th Congress , Smith was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 24th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Charles L. Knapp on March 4, 1903 . Since he on a run again in 1904 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1905 Congress of. After his time at Congress, he went into real estate in New York City, but also ran a grocery wholesaler. In 1909 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention . He died in Atlantic City about six months before the outbreak of World War I and was buried in Wiltwyck Cemetery in Kingston.
