Henry Schermerhorn De Forest (born February 16, 1847 in Schenectady , New York , † February 13, 1917 there ) was an American politician . Between 1911 and 1913 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Schermerhorn De Forest was born in Schenectady County during the Mexican-American War . He attended public schools in his hometown and Eastman Business College in Poughkeepsie . He then went into real estate, banking and contract business. In 1883 he became a City Recorder - a post he held until 1885. He was then mayor of Schenectady between 1885 and 1887 and between 1889 and 1891. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the 1910 congressional elections for the 62nd Congress , De Forest was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 23rd  constituency of New York , where he succeeded George N. Southwick on March 4, 1911 . 1912 he was defeated in his re-election bid and then retired from the after March 3, 1913 Congress of.

After his time at the congress he went into real estate and banking business. He ran unsuccessfully in 1914 for nomination for the 64th Congress . In the 1916 congressional elections for the 65th Congress , he also suffered a defeat. He died in Schenectady about a year and a half before the end of World War I and was buried in Vale Cemetery .
