Jonas Earll Junior

Jonas Earll junior (born 1786 in New York , † October 28, 1846 in Syracuse , New York) was an American politician . Between 1827 and 1831 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Nehemiah H. Earll was his cousin.

Career

Jonas Earll Jr. was born about three years after the end of the War of Independence . He lived in Onondaga County and attended community schools there. Between 1815 and 1819 he was sheriff in Onondaga County. He sat in the New York State Assembly in 1820 and 1821, and in the New York Senate from January 1823 to January 1827 . Politically, he belonged to the Jacksonian faction.

In the 1826 congressional election for the 20th Congress , Earll was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 23rd  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Luther Badger on March 4, 1827 . He was re-elected once and then dropped out after the March 3, 1831 Congress of. During his last term, he had presided over the Committee on Expenditures in the US State Department .

Between January 1832 and February 1840 he was sewer commissioner. He became postmaster of Syracuse on June 26, 1840 - a post he held until March 10, 1842. He was re-elected as sewer commissioner. He held the post from February 8, 1842 until his death on October 28, 1846 in Syracuse. His body was then interred in Walnut Grove Cemetery on Onondaga Hill .
