Sherwood Louis "Sherry" Boehlert (born September 28, 1936 in Utica , New York ) is an American politician . Between 1983 and 2007 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Sherwood Boehlert was born in Oneida County three years before the outbreak of World War II . He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Utica College in 1961 . Between 1956 and 1958 he served in the US Army . His period of service was overshadowed by the Vietnam War . He served on the staff of Congressman Alexander Pirnie from New York between 1964 and 1979 . He was elected county executive in Oneida County - a post he held between 1979 and 1982. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . In 1980 he participated as a delegate at the New York State Republican Convention and the Republican National Convention in Detroit .

In the 1982 congressional elections for the 98th Congress , Boehlert was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 25th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Hamilton Fish IV on January 4, 1983 . He was re-elected four times in a row. In 1993 he ran in the 23rd constituency of New York for the 103rd Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded Michael R. McNulty on January 4, 1993 . He was re-elected four times in a row. In the 2002 congressional elections for the 108th Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the 24th District of New York, where he succeeded John M. McHugh on January 4, 2003 .
