Elias Warner Leavenworth (born December 20, 1803 in Canaan , New York , † November 25, 1887 in Syracuse , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

The family moved in 1806 to Great Barrington ( Massachusetts ). He attended the Hudson Academy . In 1824 he graduated from Yale College . He studied 1825 to 1827 in Great Barrington and the Litchfield Law School Law . After receiving his license to practice bar in 1827, he began practicing in Syracuse. He pursued this activity until 1850 when he had to give it up because of his health. Leavenworth served in the New York Militia . He was promoted several times, most recently to Brigadier General in 1836 . Then he was President of the Village of Syracuse from 1839 to 1841 and from 1846 to 1847, and Mayor of the City in 1849, 1850, 1859 and 1860 . Leavenworth was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1850 and 1857 . He was Secretary of State of New York in 1854 and 1855 . Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . In 1860 he was President of the Republican State Convention . After the agreement with the Granada Confederation in Washington, DC, President Abraham Lincoln appointed him Commissioner for the United States in 1861 - a post he held until 1862. He was named President on the Board of Commissioners in 1865 to determine the location of the state asylum for the blind and trustee of the state asylum for the mentally ill. In 1875 he was a member of the New York and New Jersey Boundary Line Commission . In the 1874 congressional elections for the 44th Congress , Leavenworth was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 25th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Clinton D. MacDougall on March 4, 1875 . Since he on a run again in 1876 renounced, he left the after 3 March 1877 Congress of. He then went back to his previous business activities in Syracuse, where he died on November 25, 1887. His body was buried in Oakwood Cemetery .
