Ruth Noemí Colón

Ruth Noemí Colón (* in Caguas , Puerto Rico ) is an American lawyer and politician . She was Secretary of State of New York from 2010 to 2011 .

Career

Little is known about Ruth Noemí Colón's youth. She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico with a bachelor's degree . She then went to Pace University School of Law , where she did her Juris Doctor . She worked for the state government for more than 20 years, including the administration of New York Governor David Paterson . Before she started working for the New York State Department of State, it was for the New York City Housing Authority Deputy Director ( Deputy Director ) for communication and as Staff Attorney operate. Colón held several senior positions in the government of Puerto Rico.

New York Governor David Paterson named her Secretary of State of New York to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez on September 1, 2010. He said the following:

"I am pleased to appoint such a dedicated and accomplished individual as Ruth Noemí Colón as acting Secretary of State. Ruth has been a dedicated public servant, acting as special counsel and advising the secretary on a range of legal, business, licensing and local government issues. ... The Department of State is a critically important agency to our state, as it comprises a diverse range of services for New Yorkers, from real estate licensing to business incorporation to local government services. "

On March 31, 2011, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo nominated Cesar A. Perales for Secretary of State of New York. Although Perales replaced Colón in office on May 2, 2011, she was not officially ratified by the New York Senate until June 7, 2011 .

Colón lives in White Plains, New York. She is a member of the Westchester Women's Bar Association and the Board of Directors of the Puerto Rican Bar Association. El Diario La Prensa , the oldest and largest Spanish-language newspaper in New York City, counts Colón as one of the 50 Outstanding Latinas.
