John Palmer (born March 22, 1842 in New York City , † April 15, 1905 in Albany , New York ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). He was Secretary of State of New York from 1894 to 1898 .

Early years

John Palmer was during the economic crisis of 1837 in the district Stapleton in Borough Staten Iceland born in New York City. His parents were English . They returned to England with him during his childhood. Later he went on a sea voyage with his grandfather. He witnessed the siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War on their cargo ship . In the meantime, his parents returned to the United States . They settled in Bath-on-the-Hudson , which is directly across from Albany, New York, and opened a paint shop there . Palmer then joined them and became a painter .

Military career

At the outbreak of the Civil War , he signed on as a private in the 91st  Regiment of New York Volunteers and rose in the following period for certification - Captain of Volunteers on. During this time he took part in the Army of the Gulf campaigns under General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks . His father, who also undertook fell at the Battle of Petersburg ( Virginia ). After his three-year enlistment expired, Palmer re-signed. The regiment was assigned to the V  Corps in the Army of the Potomac under Governor General Kemble Warren . During the Battle of Five Forks , he was badly wounded when his tapped horse fell on him. As a result, his back was cut open by his sword.

Political career

After the war he returned to Albany and pursued his craft as a painter. In 1867 he married Margaret Moore. The couple had four children. He has served as President of the Albany Builders 'Exchange, Chairman of the Arbitration Committee, President of the Painters' Association of the State of New York, and Vice President of the Decorators 'and Painters' Association of the United States.

In August, 1891, in the national camp in Detroit ( Michigan ), he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic elected. Palmer was also a member of the New York Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States .

He was elected Secretary of State of New York in 1893 and re-elected in 1895.
