Horatio Ballard

Horatio Ballard (born August 1803 in Homer , New York , † October 8, 1879 in Cortland , New York) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ). He was Secretary of State of New York from 1862 to 1864 .

Career

Not much is known about Horatio Ballard's youth. He attended the academies in Pompey and Cortland. At some point he studied law with Judge Stephens from Cortland and Freeborn G. Jewett from Skaneateles . He was admitted to the bar at the age of 24. After that he was partner of Stephens in Cortland for many years. In 1842 he followed Shankland as District Attorney . Ballard took part in the Democratic National Conventions in 1844 and 1856 as a delegate . On June 9, 1847, he married Sarah N. Fairchild. He was elected Secretary of State of New York in 1861. His term in office was overshadowed by the civil war. In 1867 he was a member of the New York State Assembly for Cortland County . From 1867 to 1868 he took part as a delegate to the Constituent Assembly of New York, where he played an important role. He died in 1879 on his estate in Cortland.
