John T. McDonough

John Thomas McDonough (born July 12, 1843 in Birdhill , Ireland , † after 1907) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ). He was Secretary of State of New York from 1899 to 1903 .

Early years

John Thomas McDonough was born in County Tipperary during the reign of Queen Victoria . Nothing is known about his childhood. His family immigrated to the United States in 1850 and settled in Dunkirk, New York. McDonough graduated from St. John's College . He studied law at Columbia Law School , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in 1861 . He was admitted to the bar in 1869.

Political career

McDonough served two terms as Police Magistrate in Dunkirk. In 1876 he was elected to the Special Surrogate in Chautauqua County, New York - a post he held until 1878. He then went back to his legal practice, temporarily in New York City , in Buffalo (New York) and from 1881 in Albany (New York). In 1884 he ran for the office of recorder in the City of Albany, but suffered defeat. He then ran in 1891 in the third judicial district for the judge's office at the New York Supreme Court . The Democrat D-Cady Herrick won a victory at the time. In 1894 McDonough took part as a delegate to the New York Constituent Assembly . The governor of New York Levi P. Morton appointed him in 1896 to the New York State Commissioner of Statistics of Labor.

He was elected Secretary of State of New York in 1898 and re-elected in 1900. In 1899 his college awarded him a Doctor of Laws degree . The President Theodore Roosevelt appointed him associate judge at the Supreme Court of the Philippines - a post he held from 17 June 1903 to May 1, 1904th In 1904 he took part as a delegate to the Republican National Convention of the Philippines . In 1907 he joined the Independence League for the judge's office at the New York Court of Appeals , but suffered a defeat.
