John Van Ness Yates

John Van Ness Yates (born December 1779 in Albany , New York Province, † January 10, 1839 in Albany, New York ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Republican Party ).

Career

John Van Ness Yates, son of Robert Yates , a noted anti-federalist attorney and lawyer, was born and raised in Albany County during the Revolutionary War . Nothing is known about his youth. Yates studied law at John Vernon Henry's law firm . He held several offices in Albany and was one of the first trustees of the Albany United Presbyterian Church. In 1806 he served as a captain in a light infantry company . Yates was a Masters in Chancery in 1808, Recorder of the City from 1809 to 1816, and Secretary of State of New York from 1818 to 1826 .

He was buried in the Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands, New York.
