Archibald Campbell (* 1779 in Glen Lyon , Scotland , † July 14, 1856 in Albany , New York ) was an American politician .

Career

Archibald Campbell was born during the reign of King George III. born in Scotland. Nothing is known about his youth. In 1798 he immigrated to the United States and settled in Albany (New York). He subsequently worked for the Barber & Southwick printing company . In 1805 the Secretary of Sate Thomas Tillotson hired him as a clerk . Secretary of State Elisha Jenkins then made him Deputy Secretary of State in 1812 - a post he held until 1849. His tenure was overshadowed by the British-American War , the economic crisis of 1837, and the Mexican-American War . He also served after the resignation of John Canfield Spencer , who was appointed Secretary of War , from October 1841 for the remainder of Spencer's term of office as Secretary of State. He then served again as Deputy Secretary of State under Samuel Young , who was elected the new Secretary of State of New York in February 1842. Campbell was reappointed Assistant Secretary of State in 1852, but resigned from the post in 1853 due to poor health. He served under a total of 13 different Secretaries of State from the Democratic Republican Party , the Federalist Party , the Democratic Party and the Whig Party .
