The Taba was an Egyptian Ro-Ro ferry that sank on July 5, 2015, shortly after leaving the port of Safaga in the Red Sea . According to previous information, no people were killed in the accident on the 30-year-old ship.
history
The RoRo cargo ferry Taba was one of five sister ships that had been designed by the Neue Schlichting shipyard in Travemünde. Three of the ships were built at the Schlichting shipyard between 1980 and 1985. The model ship of the series was the Tajura, which was delivered to the Algerian shipping company Compagnie Algero-Libyenne de Transport Maritime (CALTRAM) in 1980 with hull number 1413 . The Egyptian state shipping company Egyptian Navigation Company (ENC) ordered another four ships of the type in 1983, two of which were built at Schlichting Shipyard and two at Port Said Shipyard in Alexandria. In the period from June 1984 to June 1985, the Schlichting shipyard first built the Taba , which was delivered in February 1985 with hull number 2011, and the Nuweiba that followed in June of the same year with hull number 2012 . The ships were among the last newbuildings before the shipyard closed in 1986. The last two ships in the series of four for the ENC were built with materials and technical advice from Schlichting employees in Port Said - they came in 1986 as Ras Mohamed and 1989 as Nuweiba in motion. All four ENC ships were used in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.
Loss in July 2015
The RoRo ferry left the port of Safaga in the early morning of July 5th with 27 crew members and 10 passengers, 43 trucks and cargo on board on a trip to Dhiba in Saudi Arabia . After leaving the port of departure, the ship was listed and gave SOS after about 20 nautical miles . The naval base in Safaga sent three ships to help, which were able to salvage everyone on board before the ship capsized and sank. The reason for the capsizing was probably wrongly jammed trucks.
