Samuel Young

Samuel Young (born 1779 in Lenox , Massachusetts , † November 3, 1850 in Ballston , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician .

Career

Samuel Young was born in Berkshire County during the Revolutionary War . Nothing is known about his youth. In 1813 he became a moderator on the Board of Supervisors of Saratoga County . He was a member of the New York State Assembly between 1814 and 1815 and served as speaker during that time . His tenure was overshadowed by the British-American War . Young became a member of the Erie Canal Commission in 1816 - a post he held until 1840. From 1818 to 1821 he sat for the Eastern District in the New York Senate (41st to 44th  New York State Legislature).

Young ran in 1819 as a member of the Bucktails faction in the Democratic Republican Party for a seat in the US Senate . In the election he ran against John Canfield Spencer of the Clintonian faction in the Democratic Republican Party and Rufus King of the Federalist Party . None of the three were elected. Young took part as a delegate to the New York Constituent Assembly in 1821 . In 1824 he ran as a member of the Bucktails faction for governor of New York, but suffered a defeat to DeWitt Clinton . Young sat in 1826 for Saratoga County in the New York State Assembly and again held the post as speaker. From 1833 to 1838 he was First Judge at Saratoga County Court. He also sat from 1835 to 1836 for the 4th District in the New York Senate (58th to 59th New York State Legislature). On May 22, 1836, he resigned from his seat. In November of that year, 1836, he was re-elected to the New York Senate. He then sat there from 1837 to 1840 (60th to 63rd New York State Legislature). During his tenure, the economic crisis of 1837 broke out. From 1842 to 1845 he held the post of Secretary of State of New York.

Young then sat again for the 4th District in the New York Senate (69th to 70th New York State Legislature) from 1846 to 1847. The period that followed was overshadowed by the Mexican-American War . He then presided over the Barnburners State Convention, which took place in Utica on June 22, 1848 . During this convention he nominated Martin Van Buren for the office of President . Young was buried in Briggs Cemetery in Ballston Spa, New York , after his death .
