Erastus Root (born March 16, 1773 in Hebron , then Windham County , now Tolland County , Colony of Connecticut , † December 24, 1846 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and politician from New York .

Career

Root graduated from Dartmouth College in 1793 and became a teacher. He then studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1796 and then practiced in Delhi (New York). He chose a political career when he was elected to the New York State Assembly , where he served from 1798 to 1802. He was then elected in 1802 as a Jefferson Republican in the 8th US Congress , where he represented the 14th district. He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1803 to March 3, 1805 . After leaving the US Congress , he returned to his practice as a lawyer. After a few years he decided in 1808 to run for the 11th US Congress . After a successful election in the 12th district, he served from March 4, 1809 to March 3, 1811 in the US Congress. During this time he was the chairman of the Committee on Claims . Then he became the Middle District in the New York Senate voted, where he remained from 1811 to 1815. He then went to the US Congress for a third time, defeating John Adams .

Root was elected to the 14th US Congress , where he represented the 8th district. He took his seat there on December 26, 1815 and held it until March 3, 1817. During this time he chaired the Committee on Expenditures in the War Department . He then ran successfully again for the State Assembly, where he worked from 1818 to 1822. During this time he was a delegate to the Constituent Assembly of New York in 1821 . He later also served as Lieutenant Governor of New York under Joseph C. Yates (1823-1824), but was defeated when trying to re- elect Samuel Young , both on the same ballot. He returned again to the State Assembly, where he served from 1826 to 1828 and again in 1830. During this time he held the post of speaker in 1827, 1828 and 1830 . In 1830 he was elected as Jacksonian in the 22nd US Congress , where he represented the 11th District. He was there from March 4, 1831 to March 3, 1833. During this time he was the chairman of the Agriculture Committee . When he ran again as Whig for the US House of Representatives in 1838 , he suffered a defeat. He then returned one last time to the New York Senate, where he remained from 1840 to 1844. He also served for many years as a major general in the New York Guard .

Erastus Root died in New York City in 1846 and was then buried in Old Cemetery , but later reburied in Woodland Cemetery , both in Delhi (New York).
