John Augustus Griswold
John Augustus Griswold (* 1818 or 1822 in Nassau , New York , † October 31, 1872 in Troy , New York) was an American politician . Between 1863 and 1869 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Augustus Griswold was born in Nassau, Rensselaer County , about seven and a half years after the end of the British-American War . He received an academic education. Then he pursued commercial business and worked in steel production. In 1855 he held the post of Mayor of Troy. He pursued banking business, but was also the President of Troy & Lansingburgh Railroad Co. , Troy & Cohoes Railroad Co., and New Orleans, Mobile & Texas Railroad Co.
In 1860 he ran unsuccessfully for the 37th Congress . Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party at that time . In the congressional elections of 1862 for the 38th Congress , Griswold was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th constituency of New York , where he succeeded James B. McKean on March 4, 1863 . He was then elected as a Republican in the 39th Congress in 1864 . He was re-elected once. Since he on a run again in 1868 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1869 Congress of.
Instead, Griswold ran unsuccessfully as a Republican for the post of governor of New York in 1868 . On April 29, 1869, he was elected regent at the University of the State of New York . He died in Troy on October 31, 1872 and was then buried in Oakwood Cemetery . At that point the civil war had ended for about seven years.
